Why Japanese?
I've heard that question more than once. Language is not a requirement for students in the school of engineering. As a computer science major, the core curriculum only touches language so much as it touches spoken language processing, or artificial intelligence programming. As an anthropology minor with an interest in East Asian studies, language is not a requirement either. Half-Puerto Rican, half-Filipina, I have an understanding of Spanish and Tagalog: the only languages to which I'm personally culturally linked.
...so, why?
My academic interests fit Japanese more than one would initially think. Today, Japan is perhaps the fastest growing, most technologically innovative country in the world. From the cars we use to the consoles we play games on, Japan has consistently been a trendsetter. Some of my fondest memories are linked to Nintendo's classic games: quite literally Linked as I'm an unabashedly enthusiastic fan of The Legend of Zelda series. With my technological interests ranging from video game design and development to forensics, bioinformatics, and genomics, Japan's technology industry is a treasure trove that requires an understanding of the archipelago's language to unlock it.
Going back to the idea of genomics, here is what binds it all together: archaeology. I am extremely interested in the humanities and I couldn't imagine an education without them. History, literature, and cultural studies, the basis of anthropological pursuits, meet science in the form of forensic archeology. As I am particularly interested in Japan's rich and unique history, I want to use my computer science to decode genomes of the remains of ancient peoples. Specific, right?
It doesn't hurt that I love Japanese food, theater, fashion, and film, either.

Hello. My name is Momo. I`m 18 years old. I`m university student. I have never been to America. The reason, why you learn Japanese is very abstract and steady.
ReplyDelete日本語の べんきょう がんばってください。
わたしも 英語の べんきょう がんばります。
Hi Momo! えいごのべんきょうはたのしですか。I really enjoy studying Japanese! I cannot wait to visit Japan some day. Best wishes for success in your English studies!
DeleteThat is probably the most specific answer I've read to a question all day. A very interesting reason to learn computer science and link it to Japanese culture.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your favorite game in the LoZ series? I'm personally a fan of Majora's Mask since I was never able to collect all of the masks, but Ocarina of Time will always be one of my favorite games that I have every played.
Oooh, I never collected all the masks for Majora's Mask either. It's the hardest game and definitely the darkest in the series, but I think that's what makes it so interesting.
DeleteOcarina has a special place in my heart, but I appreciated having a dynamic companion character in Twilight Princess (somebody more witty than an attention-seeking ball of blue light).
As for which game is my favorite, it's a tough choice... I don't think I can really say!
Hi Sheryl. I'm excited to learn that you have such a strong motive in learning Japanese, Your idea of combining technology and history is very interesting. I agree that even our world is driven by fast growing technology, education in humanities is still essential.
ReplyDeleteHi Cherry,
DeleteI honestly don't think I could last taking math/science classes alone. I definitely enjoy the humanities too much for that!
